Chicana feminism on Woman Hollering Creek
Sonia Saldivar-Hull in "Woman Hollering Transfronteriza feminisms" is making a arguement that older generation and younger generation of woman have a different view of woman's role's in society. Cleofilia's starts her life in Mexico with her father and her brothers, and only sees a view that the father is the "patriarch" and she is second level to him and her brothers.
She does not enjoy this life and wants her fantasy life that she sees in the telenovela. Clefoilia wants her life to be like her Lucia Mendez where she is always treated like a lady and taken care by her man. Clefilia decides to get married to Juan Pedro and move to Seguin Texas where she thinks her life will be wonderful. What she envisioned was completely opposite, and she was tricked by the evil media. Sandra Saldivar-Hull stated it clearly how it is easy to be portrayed by the media."The mass media, specifically through fotonovela's (photo-novels), telenovela's and revistas magazines (woman's magazines), shape women's consciousness and delimit their knowledge of the world." Here Sandra is arguing that the mass media can make you believe in that fantasy life because it does not focus on the poor people and middle class. It does not show you how education is important to be a strong woman and how it can make you an equal partner in your relationship. That is the problem with Cleofilia's idea because it is not reality.
Cleofilia then meets Felice, who is completely opposite of Cleofilia, she is not married bought her own ride and does not that man for support. She tries to make Cleofilia understand what is necessary to be a strong woman, education, confidence, and strong will to become a strong woman. I really think Cleofilia gets the concept and wants to be like Felice but then she decides to go back to Mexico which makes me think maybe she did want to fight or work to get to that point.
Felice was a younger generation Chicana that has grown up in a more modern society, Cleofilia grew up in Mexico where she was dominated by her father and the older generation of thinking. This ,of course, makes Cleofilia confused on what life style to choose. Do I become a feminist or do I allow men to run my life and feel second level to men? It is tough for women whose households even in today's society to make these adjustments when their immediate families carry the older generations values. Which is right, which is wrong? That is a question to be answered by your own personal belief!
